About the Role

  • Our client is seeking an experienced and highly competent Consultant Cardiologist to provide specialist cardiovascular care within a modern tertiary healthcare environment.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of patients with cardiovascular conditions. The role will also involve supporting cardiac emergencies, contributing to multidisciplinary care, mentoring junior clinicians and maintaining high standards of clinical practice and patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Management:

  • Provide specialist consultation and comprehensive management of cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathies.
  • Conduct outpatient consultations, follow-up clinics and inpatient reviews.
  • Develop appropriate, evidence-based treatment and management plans.
  • Provide cardiovascular risk assessment, preventive care and patient counselling.
  • Manage complex cardiac cases in collaboration with relevant specialists.

Diagnostic & Procedural Services:

  • Perform and interpret relevant cardiovascular investigations, including:
  • ECG
  • Echocardiography
  • Holter monitoring
  • Exercise stress testing
  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
  • Cardiac risk and functional assessments
  • Support cardiac imaging interpretation and clinical decision-making.
  • Participate in cardiac catheterization, coronary angiography and other specialist procedures where applicable.
  • Provide appropriate assessment and follow-up for patients requiring pacemaker or other cardiac interventions.

Emergency Cardiology:

  • Provide specialist management of acute cardiovascular presentations, including acute coronary syndromes, acute heart failure, serious arrhythmias and hypertensive emergencies.
  • Support cardiac arrest management and resuscitation.
  • Participate in the hospital's emergency and on-call arrangements.
  • Work closely with emergency and critical-care teams in managing unstable patients.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with physicians, surgeons, intensivists, radiologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals in the management of patients.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case reviews and treatment planning.
  • Provide specialist input to complex clinical cases across relevant hospital units.

Clinical Leadership & Development:

  • Lead or participate in cardiology ward rounds and specialist clinics.
  • Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to Medical Officers, Residents, House Officers and relevant nursing staff.
  • Contribute to clinical protocols, treatment pathways and service development.
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical meetings and continuing medical education.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives within the Cardiology Unit.

Clinical Governance & Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive and timely patient records.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable MDCN requirements, hospital policies and clinical governance standards.
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality assurance activities and outcome monitoring.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality, professional ethics and high standards of clinical conduct.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification from a recognised institution.
  • Fellowship in Cardiology from the West African College of Physicians (FWACP), National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCP) or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and a valid practising licence.
  • Additional international professional certifications or memberships will be an advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years post-fellowship experience in Consultant Cardiology practice.
  • Demonstrable experience managing a broad range of cardiovascular conditions.
  • Strong experience in both inpatient and outpatient cardiology.
  • Experience in a tertiary, specialist or teaching hospital environment is preferred.
  • Exposure to interventional cardiology, cardiac catheterisation or related procedures will be an advantage.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities Clinical Care and Patient Management: Assess patients with suspected or established cardiovascular disease through focused history, examination and interpretation of relevant investigations. Formulate and implement evidence-based management plans under consultant supervision for coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, hypertension, valvular disease and other cardiovascular conditions. Review cardiology inpatients and outpatients, participate in consultant-led ward rounds and ensure timely escalation of complex or deteriorating patients.
