Main Function

  • The Tax Manager is responsible for managing the company's tax affairs across the full tax management cycle, ensuring accurate tax computation, timely statutory compliance, effective tax planning, proper documentation, and proactive management of tax risks and exposures.
  • The role provides tax advisory support to management and business functions, manages tax audits and assessments, and ensures compliance with applicable Nigerian tax laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the company's overall tax compliance and management framework in line with applicable tax laws and business requirements.
  • Prepare, review, and oversee accurate computation of all applicable taxes and statutory obligations.
  • Ensure timely preparation, filing, and payment of tax returns and related statutory obligations.
  • Manage tax obligations including Company Income Tax, VAT, Withholding Tax, PAYE, Education Tax, and other applicable taxes and levies.
  • Monitor tax liabilities, payments, credits, and balances and ensure proper reconciliation with accounting records.
  • Maintain an up-to-date tax compliance calendar and ensure all tax filing and payment deadlines are met.
  • Review financial transactions, contracts, invoices, and business arrangements to determine appropriate tax treatment and identify potential tax implications.
  • Provide tax advisory support to management and relevant departments on business transactions, contracts, procurement, payroll, and other activities with tax implications.
  • Support tax planning initiatives and identify legitimate opportunities for tax efficiency while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation.
  • Monitor changes in tax laws, regulations, guidelines, and government policies and assess their impact on the company's operations.
  • Identify, assess, and manage tax risks and potential exposures and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Lead and coordinate tax audits, investigations, assessments, and reviews conducted by relevant tax authorities.
  • Prepare and review schedules, reconciliations, supporting documents, and responses required for tax audits and assessments.
  • Liaise with FIRS, LIRS, and other relevant regulatory and tax authorities on tax matters, audits, assessments, queries, and correspondence.
  • Review tax audit findings and assessments, challenge disputed positions where appropriate, and coordinate the resolution of outstanding tax matters.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax consultants, legal advisers, and other professional advisers on tax-related matters.
  • Ensure accurate maintenance of tax records, certificates, returns, correspondence, computations, and supporting documentation.
  • Review tax reconciliations and investigate variances between tax records, accounting records, and statutory filings.
  • Monitor tax receivables, credits, refunds, and outstanding tax balances and follow up on their resolution where applicable.
  • Provide guidance to Finance, Accounting, HR, Contracts, Procurement, and Operations teams on tax compliance requirements and relevant tax matters.
  • Support the tax aspects of budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and business planning activities.
  • Prepare periodic tax reports and provide management with updates on tax liabilities, compliance status, tax exposures, audits, and other significant tax matters.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate tax controls and processes to improve compliance, accuracy, efficiency, and risk management.
  • Ensure tax-related documentation and processes are maintained in accordance with company policies and applicable statutory requirements.
  • Support the implementation of tax processes for new projects, contracts, business arrangements, and operational activities.
  • Perform other tax-related duties as assigned by management.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • Professional qualification such as ICAN, ACCA, CITN, or equivalent is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 6 - 8 years of progressive experience in taxation, with demonstrated experience managing the full tax cycle.
  • Strong experience in tax compliance, tax computation, statutory filings, tax planning, tax audits, assessments, and tax advisory.
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian tax laws, regulations, and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Good understanding of taxation relating to commercial contracts and business transactions.
  • Experience dealing with FIRS, LIRS, and other relevant tax authorities.
  • Strong analytical, numerical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and relevant accounting/ERP systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, organisational skills, and ability to manage multiple tax deadlines.
  • High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential financial and tax information.
