Job Summary

  • The Security Operative is responsible for safeguarding the hotel's guests, employees, visitors, contractors, assets, facilities, and property by maintaining a visible security presence, preventing security breaches, controlling access, monitoring activities, and responding promptly to incidents.
  • The role ensures a safe, secure, and welcoming environment that reflects the standards of a superior luxury hotel.
  • The Security Operative performs routine patrols, monitors access points, screens persons and baggage where required, responds to emergencies, enforces hotel security policies, and supports the overall safety and security strategy of the hotel while delivering courteous and professional service to guests.

Key Responsibilities

Security Operations:

  • Protect the lives, property, and assets of the hotel, guests, employees, and visitors.
  • Maintain a visible and professional security presence throughout the hotel.
  • Monitor assigned security posts and patrol areas diligently.
  • Ensure compliance with the hotel's security policies, procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Report security concerns promptly to the Security Supervisor.
  • Support the Chief Security Officer in maintaining a secure environment.

Patrol & Surveillance:

  • Conduct regular patrols of guest floors, public areas, restaurants, bars, conference rooms, parking areas, offices, back-of-house areas, and hotel perimeter.
  • Monitor for suspicious persons, unattended items, safety hazards, and unusual activities.
  • Inspect emergency exits, staircases, fire escapes, and restricted areas.
  • Record patrol observations accurately in security logs.
  • Report maintenance and safety issues identified during patrols.

Access Control:

  • Control access to hotel entrances, exits, staff entrances, loading bays, and restricted areas.
  • Verify identification of employees, contractors, suppliers, and visitors where required.
  • Ensure visitor registration procedures are followed.
  • Prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
  • Monitor vehicle entry and exit where applicable.
  • Direct guests and visitors courteously when necessary.

Baggage & Vehicle Screening:

  • Conduct baggage screening using approved screening equipment or manual inspection procedures where required.
  • Inspect vehicles entering hotel premises in accordance with security procedures.
  • Ensure prohibited items are not brought onto hotel premises.
  • Handle screening activities professionally and respectfully.
  • Escalate suspicious findings immediately.

Guest Safety & Customer Service:

  • Welcome guests courteously while maintaining security awareness.
  • Provide directions and assistance to guests and visitors.
  • Respond promptly to guest requests related to safety and security.
  • Assist elderly guests, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable individuals when required.
  • Maintain professionalism and discretion at all times.
  • Support a positive guest experience without compromising security.

Incident Response:

  • Respond promptly to alarms, emergencies, disturbances, accidents, and security incidents.
  • Assist in managing medical emergencies until appropriate responders arrive.
  • Support evacuation procedures during emergencies.
  • Secure incident scenes and preserve evidence where necessary.
  • Prepare accurate incident reports.
  • Notify supervisors immediately of significant incidents.

Fire Safety & Emergency Preparedness:

  • Monitor compliance with fire safety procedures.
  • Inspect fire exits to ensure they remain unobstructed.
  • Identify potential fire hazards.
  • Assist during fire drills and emergency evacuations.
  • Operate basic fire-fighting equipment where trained.
  • Report faulty fire safety equipment immediately.

Loss Prevention:

  • Prevent theft, vandalism, fraud, and unauthorized removal of hotel property.
  • Monitor suspicious activities and investigate where appropriate.
  • Protect guest property and hotel assets.
  • Monitor loading and unloading activities.
  • Report inventory theft or property damage immediately.
  • Assist with investigations where required.

Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance:

  • Observe occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Support implementation of workplace safety procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with hotel security and safety policies.
  • Promote a safe environment for guests and employees.
  • Participate in health and safety awareness programmes.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate security occurrence books and patrol logs.
  • Prepare incident reports promptly and accurately.
  • Record visitor entries and access control information.
  • Maintain confidentiality of security information.
  • Submit daily shift reports to supervisors.
  • Report equipment faults promptly.

Teamwork & Communication:

  • Work closely with fellow security personnel and other hotel departments.
  • Attend daily security briefings.
  • Communicate effectively during incidents and emergencies.
  • Support colleagues during busy operational periods.
  • Maintain professional relationships across departments.

Compliance & Continuous Improvement:

  • Comply with all hotel policies, SOPs, and security procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education:

  • Minimum of Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or equivalent.
  • National Diploma (ND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Security Management, Criminology, Public Administration, or a related field is an added advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in hotel security, corporate security, law enforcement, military, private security, or a similar environment.
  • Experience in a luxury hotel or hospitality establishment is an added advantage.

Professional Certifications (Preferred) Basic Security Operations Training:

  • First Aid Certification.

Fire Safety Training:

  • Basic Occupational Health & Safety Certification.

CCTV Recording & Evidence Management: Ensure CCTV recordings are continuously captured and properly stored. Retrieve, preserve, and archive video footage required for investigations. Maintain accurate records of footage retrieval and evidence handling. Ensure CCTV data is protected from unauthorized access or tampering. Provide CCTV footage only to authorized personnel in accordance with hotel policy. Access Control Monitoring: Monitor electronic access control systems where installed. Observe staff entrances, restricted areas, loading bays, and service corridors. Report unauthorized access attempts immediately. Monitor contractor and visitor movements through surveillance systems. Verify compliance with approved access procedures. Security Systems Operation: Operate CCTV software, video management systems, digital recording equipment, alarm systems, and other electronic security devices. Conduct routine checks to ensure surveillance equipment is functioning properly. Report equipment faults, camera failures, or system malfunctions immediately. Coordinate with the IT Manager and Facility Manager for maintenance and repairs. Ensure uninterrupted operation of surveillance systems. Incident Reporting & Documentation: Maintain accurate CCTV logs and surveillance records. Prepare detailed reports of observed incidents and unusual activities. Record the time, location, and nature of all security incidents. Document system faults and maintenance requests. Submit daily surveillance reports to the Security Supervisor. Investigation Support: Assist the Chief Security Officer in reviewing CCTV footage during investigations. Locate and retrieve footage relevant to incidents. Support investigations relating to theft, fraud, accidents, misconduct, and security breaches. Maintain confidentiality of investigation materials. Ensure proper chain of custody for video evidence. Health, Safety & Security Compliance: Monitor surveillance footage for health and safety violations. Observe fire exits, emergency routes, and restricted areas. Report unsafe practices and hazardous conditions immediately. Support emergency evacuation monitoring where required. Ensure compliance with hotel safety policies. Confidentiality & Data Protection: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding surveillance activities and recorded footage. Protect guest privacy while performing surveillance duties. Ensure compliance with applicable privacy laws and company data protection policies. Prevent unauthorized disclosure of CCTV information. Exercise discretion when handling sensitive information. Communication & Teamwork: Maintain effective communication with Security Operatives and Supervisors. Attend daily security briefings. Coordinate with Front Office, Housekeeping, Engineering, and other departments during incidents. Support teamwork within the Security Department. Respond professionally to operational requests. Compliance & Continuous Improvement: Comply with all hotel security policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and surveillance regulations. Participate in security and CCTV training programmes. Keep current with advancements in surveillance technology. Recommend improvements to CCTV operations and monitoring procedures. Promote continuous improvement in electronic security operations. Requirements Minimum of National Diploma (ND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Security Management, Computer Science, Information Technology, Criminology, Public Administration, or a related discipline. Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) with relevant CCTV experience may be considered. Experience 2 - 3 years of experience operating CCTV systems within a hotel, corporate organization, security company, shopping mall, airport, or similar environment. Experience in a superior luxury hotel or internationally branded hospitality establishment is an added advantage. Professional Certifications (Preferred): CCTV Operations Certification.
