A Premises Officer is responsible for the maintenance, security, and safe operation of a building or site, ensuring it is clean, functional, and compliant with health and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance and Repairs:
Undertake minor repairs and handyperson duties such as painting, decorating, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work
Monitor and maintain buildings, fixtures, fittings, and furniture to ensure they are in good repair
Operate and maintain heating systems, boilers, and other plant equipment
Order materials and equipment required for maintenance tasks
Health, Safety, and Security:
Ensure the premises are safe, secure, and compliant with health and safety regulations, including COSHH and fire safety
Unlock and secure the site daily, respond to alarms, and manage emergencies such as flooding, fire, or break-ins
Conduct risk assessments and monitor cleaning and maintenance standards
Participate in health and safety committees and contribute to policy reviews
Site Management:
Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of indoor and outdoor areas, including storage and cleaning areas
Liaise with external contractors, obtain quotations, and supervise work to ensure quality and value for money
Log repairs and maintenance activities using school or council software
Support the Premises Manager or Headteacher in coordinating site operations
Emergency and Operational Duties:
Provide safe access during adverse weather conditions and emergencies
Assist in implementing the Emergency Plan and Business Continuity procedures
Respond to call-outs outside normal working hours as required
