Job Objective
The Lead Anaesthetist will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of anaesthesia services at AMCE, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
This role involves providing clinical leadership to the anaesthesia team, managing the administration of anaesthesia during surgical and diagnostic procedures, and ensuring that all practices adhere to the highest standards of care and safety.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Anesthesia Oversight:
Provide comprehensive clinical leadership to the entire anesthesia team, including senior resident anesthetists, nurse anesthetists, and support staff.
Serve as the primary consultant for all complex or critical anesthesia-related matters, guiding crucial clinical decisions and best practices across the institution.
Lead the Anesthesia department by demonstrating resilience and exemplary professionalism, consistently maintaining a safe and high-performance clinical environment for all team members.
Be directly accountable for the delivery of key clinical performance indicators specific to anesthesia outcomes, actively striving for continuous improvement.
Participate in the planning and execution of complex and high-risk surgical or procedural cases, providing expert anesthesia management and direct clinical supervision.
Lead daily clinical briefings and post-case debriefings for the anesthesia team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and critical reflection.
Strategic Planning & Service Development:
Develop, implement, and continually refine strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the breadth and quality of anesthesia services provided by the hospital.
Collaborate closely with surgical, interventional radiology, and other procedural departments to optimize integrated patient care pathways and improve overall clinical outcomes.
Lead the assessment, evaluation, and adoption of new anesthesia technologies, techniques, and pharmacological agents, ensuring safe and effective integration into practice.
Contribute significantly to the development and implementation of long-term workforce strategies for the Anesthesia department, addressing evolving healthcare needs.
Actively participate in strategic planning meetings with senior management and clinical leadership to provide expert insights and recommendations for advancing anesthesia practice.
Champion solutions and services that enhance anesthesia care delivery, contributing to AMCE's reputation and competitive advantage within the healthcare sector.
Clinical Governance, Quality & Patient Safety:
Ensure that all anesthesia practices and departmental operations comply strictly with hospital policies, national regulatory standards, and international best practices for patient safety and quality.
Oversee the comprehensive development, rigorous implementation, and consistent adherence to evidence-based clinical protocols for preoperative assessments, intraoperative anesthesia administration, and postoperative care.
Lead quality improvement initiatives specifically aimed at reducing complications, preventing adverse events, and enhancing patient safety within the continuum of anesthesia care.
Conduct regular clinical audits of anesthesia outcomes, processes, and documentation to ensure compliance, identify areas for improvement, and drive corrective actions.
Ensure robust governance arrangements are in place for the Anesthesia department, encompassing financial management, regulatory activity, and quality assurance processes.
Implement corrective action plans stemming from audit findings, incident reviews, or regulatory inspections, ensuring sustained improvement.
Team Management & Professional Development:
Provide direct supervision and comprehensive oversight to the entire anesthesia team, including conducting performance evaluations, setting objectives, and managing clinical schedules effectively.
Provide strong, empowering leadership to develop, coach, and support the professional growth of all anesthetists, fostering a high-performing and continuously learning team.
Develop and maintain the Anesthesia department with the optimal mix of clinical knowledge, technical skills, and experience required to achieve strategic objectives and ensure reliable patient care delivery.
Establish clear departmental goals, objectives, and operating procedures that guide all anesthesia staff development activities and ensure alignment with organizational priorities.
Provide dedicated mentorship and structured training programs to junior anesthetists and residents, cultivating a culture of continuous learning and clinical excellence.
Facilitate opportunities for ongoing professional development, advanced certifications, and continuing medical education for all anesthesia team members.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Communication:
Collaborate seamlessly and effectively with surgeons, operating room staff, intensivists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated, efficient, and holistic patient care delivery.
Communicate clearly, empathetically, and comprehensively with patients and their families, explaining anesthesia procedures, addressing concerns, obtaining informed consent, and providing detailed postoperative care instructions.
Establish credibility and set a compelling example as a proactive senior leader and change agent throughout the hospital, earning respect by demonstrating a profound understanding of departmental and organizational objectives.
Offer expert advisory expertise to senior management and other department heads in relation to any issues or strategic considerations impacting anesthesia services.
Lead inter-departmental discussions and facilitate consultations to define clinical practice requirements and optimize care pathways involving anesthesia.
Mediate and effectively resolve any interdepartmental conflicts or communication breakdowns related to anesthesia care, ensuring smooth operational flow.
Operational Excellence & Technology Integration:
Oversee the efficient scheduling, allocation, and utilization of all anesthesia resources, including personnel, operating room time, and specialized equipment.
Lead the evaluation, selection, and seamless implementation of new anesthesia technologies, equipment, and information systems to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
Drive digital transformation initiatives within the Anesthesia department to streamline workflows, improve data management, and enhance clinical decision support.
Ensure the optimal functioning, maintenance, and regular calibration of all anesthesia equipment and infrastructure, ensuring patient safety and operational readiness.
Implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency within the anesthesia department, minimizing delays and optimizing patient throughput.
Contribute to the design and optimization of patient-focused anesthesia facilities, incorporating feedback from staff and patients to ensure a safe and outstanding environment.
Organizational Contribution & Executive Reporting:
Actively participate in key hospital committees focused on surgical services, patient safety, clinical outcomes, and overall clinical governance, representing the anesthesia department's perspective.
Provide regular, concise, and insightful updates to the Board of Directors on the performance, strategic direction, and contributions of the Anesthesia department.
Contribute significantly to AMCE's overall strategic planning processes, offering expert recommendations related to patient care expansion and service line development.
Play a key role in identifying emerging trends and improvements in healthcare delivery that could impact anesthesia practice, proactively providing solutions.
Ensure the Anesthesia department's services consistently contribute to AMCE's strategic objectives, fostering excellence in patient care and retaining a competitive advantage.
Education, Skills and Competencies
Medical Degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent) from a nationally and internationally recognized institution.
Board Certification in Anesthesiology (e.g., Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in Anesthesiology, Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCNA), or equivalent international certification).
Valid and current medical license to practice Anesthesiology/Critical Care.
Must have minimum of 9 years post qualification experience as an Anaesthetist
Demonstrated expertise in leading quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, or clinical governance activities specific to Anesthesiology.
Proficiency in advanced anesthesia techniques, including regional anesthesia, difficult airway management, and critical care management.
Experience with the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new anesthesia technologies and equipment.
Strong knowledge of national and international patient safety standards and regulatory requirements pertinent to Anesthesiology.
Postgraduate qualifications in healthcare management, leadership, or a related field is highly desirable.
