JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment on the company's land drilling rig. Ensures the availability and reliability of mechanical systems and drilling equipment required for safe and efficient rig operations. Responsible for implementing preventive and corrective maintenance activities in accordance with the Company's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), OEM recommendations, approved maintenance procedures, and applicable HSE requirements.
Supervises Mechanics and Motormen, maintains appropriate spare parts and maintenance records, and works closely with the Maintenance Supervisor, Rig Manager, and other rig personnel to minimize equipment downtime and support continuous drilling
operations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Mechanical Operations and Maintenance
Conducts routine inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment on the rig.
Operates, maintains, and repairs power plant equipment and associated mechanical systems.
Maintains and repairs mechanical components of drilling equipment, including the Driller's Console, Top Drive System, drawworks, mud pumps, drilling equipment auxiliaries, and related equipment.
Preventive Maintenance and CMMS
Implements preventive maintenance activities in accordance with the Company's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), approved maintenance schedules, and OEM recommendations.
Ensures scheduled preventive and corrective maintenance activities are completed within required timelines.
Maintains accurate and timely records of inspections, maintenance activities, equipment failures, repairs, and corrective actions.
Equipment Reliability and Troubleshooting
Monitors the condition and performance of critical mechanical equipment to identify potential failures before they affect operations.
Troubleshoots mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults and determines appropriate corrective actions.
Communicates significant equipment failures and breakdown information through the appropriate reporting line for onshore maintenance support.
Supports planning and coordination of major operational activities, including rig moves and equipment mobilization.
Spare Parts and Inventory Management
Monitors mechanical spare parts, consumables, tools, and critical equipment requirements necessary to support rig operations.
Maintains adequate levels of critical mechanical spares and initiates requisitions in a timely manner.
Ensures mechanical spare parts, tools, and materials are appropriately stored, preserved, and controlled.
HSE and Operational Compliance
Ensures mechanical maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with the company's HSE requirements, approved procedures, and applicable regulatory standards.
Complies with and enforces Permit to Work (PTW), isolation procedures, and other applicable safe systems of work.
Participates actively in safety meetings, emergency drills, inspections, audits, and other HSE activities.
Supports the implementation and close-out of recommendations arising from client inspections, regulatory inspections, internal audits, and rig management reviews.
Demonstrates safety leadership and ensures assigned personnel comply with the Company's HSE requirements.
Team Supervision and Development
Supervises and coordinates the activities of Mechanics, Motormen, and other personnel assigned to mechanical maintenance activities.
Allocates work and ensures assigned maintenance tasks are completed safely, correctly, and within required timelines.
Ensures personnel under supervision possess the required competence, training, and certification for their assigned responsibilities.
Coaches, mentors, and develops maintenance personnel through structured on-the job training and practical supervision.
EDUCATION
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree, HND, or recognized technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Relevant technical or vocational qualification may be considered where supported by substantial rig mechanical experience.
Relevant mechanical trade or professional certification applicable to drilling operations is desirable.
Valid medical fitness certification for rig deployment.
Relevant HSE and safety certifications required for land rig operations.
OEM or specialized technical training on drilling rig mechanical systems will be an advantage.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 8 years' relevant experience in drilling and/or workover operations.
Minimum of 2 years' experience as a Chief Mechanic or equivalent senior mechanical position on a land drilling rig.
Demonstrated hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting drilling rig mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
Experience working in safety-critical drilling environments.
Previous supervisory experience managing Mechanics, Motormen, or maintenance personnel.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Maintenance and repair of land rig mechanical systems and equipment.
Mechanical troubleshooting, fault diagnosis, and problem-solving.
Engine, cooling, lubrication, and fuel system maintenance.
Maintenance of Top Drive Systems, drawworks, mud pumps, and other drilling equipment.
Interpretation of mechanical drawings, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
Preventive and corrective maintenance using CMMS.
Application of PTW, equipment isolation, and safe maintenance procedures.
Proficiency in CMMS, digital maintenance reporting tools and Microsoft Office Suite.
