This is a full-time hybrid role for a Backend Tech Lead specializing in .NET and C#. The position is based in Lagos. The Backend Tech Lead will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend services and APIs, ensuring security and performance optimization, and collaborating closely with the product and frontend teams. Additionally, the role includes mentoring junior developers, performing code reviews, and contributing to architectural decisions to align the technology with business goals. This is a high-impact leadership role where you'll design production-scale infrastructure handling real-time betting operations, payment processing, and social features for thousands of concurrent users.
What You'll Do
Lead the design and delivery of core backend services: wallet, bet engine, live betting, user identity, copy-bet infrastructure, and social feed
Own the technical architecture across .NET 8+, PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, and AWS/EKS
Set and enforce engineering standards: code reviews, system design, testing, observability, and deployment practices
Mentor and grow a team of senior backend engineers through 1:1s, design reviews, and pairing
Collaborate with Product and Design to break down features into reliable, scalable system designs
Drive incident response, post-mortems, and reliability improvements across backend services
Stay close to the codebase we expect our Tech Lead to be a strong individual contributor, not just a manager
What We're Looking For
6+ years of backend engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a tech lead or principal engineer capacity
Deep expertise in C# / .NET ideally .NET 6+ / .NET 8
Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, API design, event-driven architecture, and data modelling
Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, and Kafka (or equivalent message broker)
Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure AWS preferred; experience with Kubernetes/EKS a strong plus
Track record of mentoring engineers and raising the bar for a team
Excellent communication and the ability to work across product, mobile, and frontend teams
Prior experience in fintech, gaming, or high-transaction-volume platforms is a strong advantage
Nice to Have
Experience building or scaling a betting, gaming, or real-time financial platform
Familiarity with BFF (Backend for Frontend) patterns for mobile and web
Exposure to observability tooling Datadog, OpenTelemetry, or equivalent
Experience working across African markets, especially Nigeria
