• Announcer Job Description

    An announcer is a television or radio reporter and analyst whose job involves introducing and hosting on-air programs, reading news bulletins, commercials and public service announcements, and providing commentary on topics such as fashion, sports, lifestyle or politics to a public audience.

    An announcer should be well organized, good at timing, perceptive, enthusiastic, calm, confident, courageous, approachable and believable, and have good pronunciation and a pleasant and well-controlled voice. They should also be able to ask the right question at the right time and analyze and interpret information.

    Announcers may do some or all of the following:

    • research and prepare for programs and interviews
    • prepare and read scripts
    • operate broadcasting equipment
    • introduce and end on-air programs and shows
    • read commercials and make public on-air announcements
    • provide commentaries on events
    • interview guests and moderate discussions
    • select and play music for an audience
    • engage audience on social media

    • act as emcees at local events such as weddings and launchings

  • Working Conditions

    Announcers usually work shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays, as many radio and television stations are on-air 24 hours a day. They work indoors in studios, but may also work outside when hosting events or gathering news.

    There are no educational requirements to become an announcer, but large stations will require candidates to have a degree in mass communication, radio broadcasting, journalism or language.
