• Plumber Job Description

    A plumber is a person whose job is to install, repair and maintain water, drainage and gas pipes in buildings. plumbers review the blueprints of buildings to understand how best to install and fix pipes, drains, fixtures and fittings used for plumbing systems such as water distribution systems or waste disposal systems.

    A plumber should be well organized, fast, careful, reliable, and able to read and interpret plumbing designs, plans, and instructions. They should have physical strength and stamina to cope with the physical demands of their job. They should not be easily irritated by a dirty, messy or smelly environment.

  • What does a Plumber do?

    Plumbers may do some or all of the following:

    • plan the installation of plumbing systems in buildings
    • read and interpret blueprints for plumbing systems
    • decide on plumbing materials to be used for a project and give cost estimates
    • install and maintain plumbing systems
    • connect tubing and fittings using soldering techniques, compression fitting, etc.
    • inspect plumbing installations
    • test and repair leaky pipes and other plumbing installations
    • teach and supervise plumbing apprentices
  • Where does a Plumber work?

    There are no formal educational requirements to become a plumber, as skills are gained on the job under the supervision of more experience plumbers.

    People who are interested in plumbing should enroll in an apprenticeship program. After the apprenticeship, they will become experienced journeymen.

  • Working Conditions

    Plumbers usually work normal business hours, but may sometimes work evenings and weekends or be on call for emergencies.

    Plumbers work in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. Their job may expose them to raw sewage and dangerous chemicals.
