Construction Contractor Job Description
A construction contractor, also known as a construction manager is a person whose job is to plan, coordinate, and supervise a construction project. Their work involves planning the construction of a project, hiring subcontractors and construction laborers to execute the project, supplying the construction materials for the project, and overseeing the project from its beginning through to its completion.
A construction contractor should have strong business skills and technical knowledge of construction processes. They should be able to work with a wide range of people and resolve issues between people. They should also be good at scheduling activities, and observing, directing, and motivating others.

Construction contractors may do some or all of the following:
- plan and oversee construction projects
- collaborate with architects, engineers and other construction workers
- establish a budget for the construction project
- obtain building permits and licenses for the construction project
- hire and supervise subcontractors and construction laborers
- supply construction materials for the project
- ensure that building construction codes and regulations are complied with
- ensure that construction blueprints are properly followed
Where does a Construction Contractor work?
Construction contractors may work long or irregular hours, and may be on call. Working evenings and weekends to meet deadlines is also common. They may travel and spend much of their time on construction sites, and work in all types of weather conditions.
What is Required to Become a Construction Contractor?
There are no standard educational requirements to become a construction contractor, but a degree in construction management, construction technology or a similar discipline is helpful. Many construction contractors enter the position by working their way up in the construction industry.
