• Civil Engineering Technician Job Description

    A civil engineering technician is a person who works under the direction of a civil engineer and assist them in planning and designing structures such as dams, roads, highways, bridges, tunnels or waste water systems.

    A civil engineering technician should be creative, analytical, practical and methodical, and have the ability to communicate effectively. They should be good at mathematics and able to use computer-aided design software (CAD) to design and plan constructions.

    Civil engineering technicians may do some or all of the following:

    • collaborate with clients, engineers and others to build and maintain structures
    • perform land-surveying duties
    • read and interpret construction blueprints from engineers
    • prepare drawing of planned structures using CAD software
    • help prepare list of construction materials and estimate costs
    • conduct tests on construction materials and soil
    • check work done by contractors, write reports and document project activities
    • report to engineers and discuss work done
